This is a spoiler-free review.

Send is a collection of poetry that focuses on the many different forms of communication that we have in our world today. With the plethora ways we have to access each other these days, I felt like this would be very interesting and topical book of poems. But, though there were a few poems that did stand out to me, overall, I did not end up enjoying this particular collection. Every poet has their own style, and there is so much room for creativity in this form of writing. Because of this, not every style is going to click with every reader, and Capilongo’s style was just not for me.

Each poem in this collection is relatively short, which I found to be a good reflection of our condensed communications with one another over text, Twitter, Facebook, and other social media. Many are written using stream of consciousness, which is yet another hallmark of communication these days.

Capilongo touches on the jumble of thoughts we throw out into cyberspace, sometimes in a rather narcissistic way, and how technology can completely take over every action, every moment of our lives. He tells a relatable story in a very abstract format. And while all of this was quite entertaining, the majority of this collection just fell a bit flat for me. Personally, I found that a large portion of this poetry felt more like a random jumble of words, rather than a meaningful message. These poems did not click with me—they felt far too disjointed and at times unintelligible.

Happy Tuesday, everyone! It’s time for another Top 10 Tuesday list. This is an original weekly blog meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week, there is a new bookish topic for bloggers to create a list about. If you want to know more about Top 10 Tuesday, click here!

This week’s Top 10 Tuesday topic is a Mother’s Day related freebie. So my choice for a topic is the top ten books I think that my mother should read! She is always asking me for reading recommendations, so I figured this would be an interesting topic to do. I would also love to see her get back into reading more. So hopefully, my mom will see this! 😀

Update + Writing

Hey Everyone!

It’s been a while since I’ve done a general update post, so I figured it was about time! Also I’m sorry in advance if this ends up being rambley and all over the place!

First of all…I officially hit 300 followers the other day!! 😀

25cce031093c09dfcf467d8b8256174f5a56b34d0ce8a0af5c8fee591144f414

A year ago when I first started this blog, I never imagined it growing into what it has! And that is all thanks to you amazing and wonderful people! I am completely shocked, and I feel so honored to have such an incredible community of book lovers coming by and reading my bookish ramblings. I absolutely adore chatting with all of you and meeting people from all over the world through our common interests. That is the coolest thing ever!

Thank you all so much for following my little blog, and for all of your love and support. I know that my posting has been quite spotty and inconsistent in recent months, and you guys still stand by me even while I go through this tough time in my life. That means more to me than I could ever express. Each and every single one of you are awesome! ❤

Second, I wanted to give you guys a bit of a general life/blog update!

Though I have been getting back on track with posting/commenting/replying, I know I have really been inconsistent lately, and I apologize. I’ve let some life stress and sadness get to me, and that has caused me to go through the biggest reading and blogging slump I’ve ever been through.

Not only have I been behind on reviewing, but I have been terrible at replying to your comments in a timely manner. I promise, I always read (and appreciate!) every comment you guys leave, even if it takes me forever to respond! I’ve also been awful at leaving comments on your posts, but rest assured, I am always checking out your blogs and keeping up with your posts every day. ❤

Some of my goals going forward:

  • I will be catching up on reading/reviewing, and eventually trying to get to a point where I’m posting at least one to two reviews each week.
  • I would like to be getting at least three to four posts up per week.
  • I’ll be much quicker about replying to all of your comments!!
  • I’ll be better at keeping up with all of YOUR posts and much more consistent with commenting on them as well.

Thank you all again for sticking with me through this, and I promise, things will be improving around here! 🙂

And lastly, I’ve made some new changes and additions to the site!

As you’ve probably noticed, I’ve gone and added some new graphics to the blog. Finally, I’ve created a header (took me long enough!), and some general new designs for my pages. I’m hoping to do a bit more with the site in terms of the design, but it’s not my strongest area so it may take some time!

Also, I have done something I have been debating for quite some time which is add a section for my personal, creative writing to this blog. I haven’t had a place to share my creative writing for quite some time, so I figured, why not put some on here! I’ll be updating it more in the future, but for now I have a short story, some excerpts from full stories, and a few poems to start off. So, just in case anyone’s interested… 🙂

And here’s an example of what you’ll find there:

Paradise

Prologue

Many faces passed up and down Westminster Road each day, all respectively bearing a distinct expression. Every person possessed a detailed and utterly singular mask, crafted by every moment experienced within his or her lifetime and continuously changing as the seconds ticked by. Some were fresh and eager, others timeworn and wise, but all were important. No two were—nor ever could be—the same.

The road was rich in history, full of marvel and intrigue. It had seen change, felt every footstep, heard every sound made and word uttered. It had been the sole witness to the drama of human life that unceasingly played out. A million stories flooded the streets, tumbled from the eaves of houses and the signs of shops, and danced on the wind among discussions and shouts.

However, life would not pause to observe, time would not stop to catch its breath, and the faces bled together into a mass of chaos and bustling traffic. These stories remained untold, trampled into the dusty ground of the old town where they were never bothered again. Secrets melted into the spaces between cobblestones and the cracks in walls. The days hurried on, the nights slept peacefully, and nothing in particular was noticed. This was the first mistake.

****

I know a number of you guys are writers as well, so I’m also really hoping that some of you will share your writing with me! I would absolutely love to read some of your work! Always feel free to send me links to your writing, either in the comments here or in the writing section of my blog!

Anyway, that’s all for now! Hope you are all doing well, and I’ll talk to you in my next post! 😀 ❤

Synopsis: The first volume of New and Selected poetry in twelve years from the two-time Poet Laureate of the United States.

Aimless Love gives the reader an opportunity to assess the rich scope of Collins’ gifts. Containing more than fifty new poems and a generous gathering from his collections of the past decade-Horoscopes for the Dead, Ballistics, The Trouble with Poetry, and Nine HorsesAimless Love showcases the best of his poetic maneuvers: the everyday ends in the infinite, playfulness is paired with empathy, irony gives way to wonder. Possessed of a unique voice that is at once plain and melodic, Billy Collins has managed to enrich American poetry while greatly widening the circle of its audience.

____________________________________________________________________

This is a very different sort of review from what I am used to writing. There is no plot to discuss, no characters to analyze—this is something much more indefinite. It is more brief and personal; a plethora of short narratives that unravel differently for each pair of eyes that fall on them. Poetry is an incredibly powerful and emotional type of writing, one that is far more open to individual interpretation than any other. Every work holds a different meaning—touches us all in a singular way—depending on who and where we are. It is challenging to evaluate something so intensely subjective, but I feel the need to recommend this particular experience.

Billy Collins has had a very long and distinguished career in writing. He served as Poet Laureate of the United States from 2001 to 2003 and as Poet Laureate for the State of New York from 2004 to 2006. This particular collection is compiled of selected poems from Collins’ four most recently published books, with an additional section of his newest, previously unpublished work.

Very simply put, Billy Collins has a remarkable way with words. This was my first experience with his work, and just a few poems in, he had already secured a spot has one of my favorite poets of all time—definitely my favorite contemporary one. I am a massive fan of poetry—both reading and writing it—but I have rarely been so completely fascinated by one collection.

The great intelligence and perceptiveness in his words, as well as his unusual and highly intriguing view of the world, make for a captivating read. He has an uncanny knack for writing in a deceptively simple way. On the outside, many of his poems are seemingly very straightforward, focusing on mundane aspects of life and the world around us. However, dive into them and you will be struck with the true depth contained within the stanzas.

Collins’ writing is easily comprehensible, and the subjects he focuses on are exceedingly relatable, which opens his work up to a wide audience. Addressing all of his topics with a very wry tone, a great deal of wittiness, and an eclectic troupe of narrators, he achieves a perfect balance of both humor and earnestness. He tells stories about the smaller aspects of life—the little nooks and crannies of both the physical world and the human mind that often times go unnoticed.

What he accomplishes is a slowing in the pace of the reader’s world, followed by a gradual magnification of life on the periphery of our daily vision and the transient moments that can be lost on us completely. We are made to look at common events, issues, and emotions through an utterly unique lens. Every reader will come away from his poems with a revitalized view of their world and a deeper appreciation for that which is taken for granted or deemed inconsequential to our existence. Collins’ ability to so eloquently and successfully capture these details is astonishing.

The format of this collection makes it an absolutely wonderful introduction for those who have no prior experience with his writing. In a single book, we are given a condensed overview of over a decade of his life in poetry. Though his career is much more prolific than what can be summed up in a few hundred pages, we are able to get a taste for what it has been like—how his writing has grown and changed, and what has remained consistent throughout the years. All in all, it shows his distinctive, inspiring, and constantly engaging style.

I feel the need to point out once again that every reader’s feelings about this type of work will be incredibly unique and individual given the nature of poetry as a medium. For me personally, I truly connected with the writing and themes displayed throughout these pages. However, I believe that no matter what a reader does or doesn’t get from these poems, the extraordinary talent and mastery of language displayed by Collins is something everyone can appreciate. I cannot recommend his work—and this collection in particular—highly enough.
